Take a Moment with GOOD SPORT
Welcome to our new regular series, 'Take a Moment With…' — where we send a roll of film to a guest to capture the moments that make up their day, or week, then ask them a few questions.
First cab off the rank is Good Sport. Long-time friends of ours here at Almighty, Good Sport is a magazine and creative studio run by Matt Willocks and Ben Clement. Based in Melbourne, Matt and Ben captured a random week in the lead-up to the release of Good Sport Magazine’s seventh issue.
What was the timeframe these were shot over and how typical is what you’ve captured for us?
Matt Willocks: This was a week at Good Sport. No two weeks are the same. We could be on location one day, renting a space for an offsite the next, or in the mountains over the weekend. I feel it invites different stimuli and nuance. Which I love.
Ben Clement: Sometimes, as Matt said, things are a blur in moving from one thing fluidly to another. Maybe there are a few blurry photos to match!

For those uninitiated, give us the brief overview of Good Sport
MW: Good sport magazine has been around for 12 years. And within the last year, we've evolved that into Good Sport studio. We love playing in the left of field, and immerse ourselves within the subculture of sports.
BC: Our ethos is always ‘left of field’ this means always questioning and looking at other points of view or finding ways to be creative in areas that have not seen much creativity.
Good Sport is soon approaching Issue 7, a lot has changed in the world, sport, and the media landscape in that time. Has your approach to the stories you want to tell changed a lot in that time too?
MW: I don't think my approach has changed over time. I'm still very considered, intentional, and lead with curiosity and empathy. It can be quite vulnerable, people sharing stories or ideas, so I want to ensure that the right stories are being told in the most considered way. I feel issue #7 has a lot of substance to it.
BC: We’ve always sat outside the dominant media landscape, and tbh, the dominant media landscape is not changing enough. We’re always more focussed on the niche aspects of sport. Being outside of these norms allows us to think in ways that allow people to think, oh, wow, I’d not seen that before.

From the photo album, we can see a lot of running, bikes, some studio time and some quieter moments too. There’s no doubt a lot of crossover between work and play for the both of you, with time in nature also coming from work too, how do you balance this?
MW: I was living the Good Sport lifestyle before Good Sport was around. So, the crossover between work and play is part of the process, really. Through play observations and ideas come up, often uninvited, but then these can be expanded on or brought into our work. It’s all connected.
BC: To run a magazine that is connected to sport, part of that is to also live an active life. It helps us understand what we are talking about and it provides space to think creatively.
In a world where it would seemingly be easy enough to pump out all your magazine content online via socials, you seem to keep it mostly all in print,
Can you touch on how Good Sport shows up across different media formats, and why physical media is so important?
MW: There's something very intentional about physical media. We have an ecosystem of different mediums (digital newsletters, experiences. social platforms, so on), but the magazine is important because you’ve made a choice to read it. That choice to sit down, open it, read it, and consume ideas is all within your control. It's a medium that brings with it a moment of stillness. I’m very grateful to everyone that makes that choice.
BC: While platforms like IG can be good for instant connections and nuggets of info. Our energy is in the longer lasting aspects of where we want our work to live. We only got one life right? So why not put that effort into something special.

When can we expect Good Sport #7 to land and what will we find between the covers?
MW: There are a lot of relationships, observations, conversations, and insights that I've been building over the years. Which will be published through a medium that seems to go against logic in modern media. There’s a sense of longevity and rebellion in it for me. An issue that people keep coming back to.
BC: Out in June!
If GoodSport made a new drink for Almighty, what would it be?
MW: Big fan of the blood orange. So you’ve already got me there.
BC: What about a lemon, lime, bitters?
